Christian Foundations Class: the Holy Spirit

From our class on Wednesday, May 21st, 2014.
In Summery: About the Holy Spirit, we believe:
  • He is God, one with the Father and the Son.
  • He inspired Scripture and enlightens the believer.
  • His primary function in this age is to bring lost humanity to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
  • He manifests the life of Christ in the believer in a variety of ways that include both fruit and gifts.
  • A deepening work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer is both valid and necessary.
  • The power and gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to the believer to enable God’s people to do what otherwise they could not do - obey the Great Commission and build up the Body of Christ on earth.

Upward

“True contentment is a scarce commodity in the world. Our world is fueled by discontent. It runs the engines of government, economy, and society. Everyone wants more than he has or wants something else than she has. They want to be happier, wealthier, prettier, whatever. Enormous amounts of time, energy, and money are devoted to seeking this elusive contentment and for its sake sacrifices are made, families are divided, the law is broken, great risks are undertaken, and pleasures hotly pursued.” -Robert Rayburn

“The Puritans made it a practice of meditating on six great things from God's Word: the majesty of God; the severity of sin; the beauty of Christ; the certainty of death; the finality of judgment; and the misery of hell.” -Ligon Duncan

"I fear too often the church has become an organization of guilty people with a guilty preacher standing in the pulpit, telling guilty people that they should feel guiltier." -Steve Brown

He Is Risen

“If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that he said; if he didn't rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what he said? The issue on which everything hangs is not whether or not you like his teaching but whether or not he rose from the dead.” -Tim Keller

“I wonder whether Jesus was even aware of the nails and the thorns. He was overwhelmed by the outer darkness. On the cross, He was in hell, totally bereft of the grace and the presence of God, utterly separated from all blessedness of the Father. He became a curse for us so that we one day will be able to see the face of God. God turned His back on His Son so that the light of His countenance will fall on us. It’s no wonder Jesus screamed from the depths of His soul.” RC Sproul

“The Bible is one long story of God meeting our rebellion with His rescue, our sin with His salvation, our guilt with His grace, our badness with His goodness. The overwhelming focus of the Bible is not the work of the redeemed but the work of the Redeemer.” -Tullian Tchividjian

Psalm 150

“The Psalter is full of physicality: texts are sung, hands are lifted, hands are clapped, knees are bowed, stairs are walked, instruments are played. The words are designed to become part of us, and they do that by our physical contact with them. We’re supposed to chew on them, sing them, and play them so they can orient us to who God is and who we are in relation to him.”  Reggie Kidd

Upward: sermons in Philippians

“You understand that the Christian life is a fight for joy. It is not the rejection of joy: it is the rejection of cheap joy. It is not the rejection of satisfaction: it's the rejection of superficial satisfaction. It's not the rejection of delight: it's the rejection of shallow delight in pursuit of cheap delight.” -Ligon Duncan

Living Waters

"For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water." Jeremiah 2:13

Moralism is not the Gospel

“One of the most insidious false gospels is a moralism that promises the favor of God and the satisfaction of God’s righteousness to sinners if they will only behave and commit themselves to moral improvement.” Al Mohler

Idols come with a price tag

“I am not asking whether or not you have rival gods. I assume that we all do; they are hidden in every one of us. The question is: What do we do about them?” Tim Keller
