Advent 2012

Our culture has a "hurry up" attitude in the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's so easy to get caught up in it the flurry of activity. This is why I love Advent. This is the season where we slow down and remember. Here's how the Worship Sourcebook describes Advent:

The great proclamation “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” assures us that God has entered into human history through the incarnation of the Son. The season of Advent, a season of waiting, is designed to cultivate our awareness of God’s actions - past, present, and future.

Hidden With Christ

Our new sermon series in Colossians begins on Sunday, July 22.

"Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you will also appear with him in glory." Colossians 3:2-4

Joseph. Providence. God.

This Sunday I conclude my sermon series on Joseph by examining providence. RC Sproul sums up God's providence in Joseph's life very well:

“We are creatures with a will of our own. We make things happen. But God’s sovereign providence stands over and above our actions. He works out his will through the actions of human wills, without violating the freedom of those human wills. The clearest example of this that we find in the Scriptures is in the case of Joseph and his brothers. Though Joseph’s brothers incurred true guilt through their treachery against him, the providence of God was working through their sin.” RC Sproul

Joseph.

One young man.
One foolish father.
Ten angry brothers.
Jealousy. Hatred. Betrayal.
Slavery. Temptation. Prison.
Sovereignty.

Welcome to Joseph's world.

The Night Before

During this season leading up to our celebration of the Resurrection I'll be preaching a short series on John 13-17. We're calling it "The Night Before" because these chapters contain information that Jesus shared with his disciples the night before he died on the cross. Everything that Jesus said during his ministry is important (of course), but we will intentionally explore those things that he spoke just prior to his betrayal and arrest. And it's helpful to remember that when we read the words of Jesus in these chapters, he knew that he would be dead in less than 24 hours.

I don't know about you, but I want to know what was on his mind the night before Jesus died for me!
